Lighting fixtures used in a typical theater are also known as lighting instruments and the instruments are divided into two categories, which include Spot fixtures and the Wash fixtures. The Spot lighting fixtures help you to produce bright and hard-edged beams while the Wash lighting fixtures are being used to create soft beams with little control. Both of these categories are differentiated mainly by their reflector shape.

What you need to do:

Ellipsoidal reflector

Fresnels reflector

Parabolic Aluminum Reflectors (PARs)

Strip Lights

Intelligent Lighting

Lighting Fixtures

Method:

Most of Ellipsoidal reflector spots used in a typical lighting for a theater are normally known through their specific brands that you choose to use. It uses its ellipse-shaped reflector located behind the instrument’s lamp, which enables it to focus the light beam to an accurate point before refracting it through one or more glass lenses.

As for Fresnel’s reflector, it comes with sphere-shaped reflectors for producing a soft, round beam that can be produced as larger or smaller but without any controlling over them. Fresnels were invented by its inventor based on the lighthouses concept, but using a smaller version of lighting fixture for the usage in stage plays.

Another reflector is known as the parabolic aluminum reflectors or PARs, which can create a soft, oval beam that managed to produce bright lightings that works very well with dark color filters. It also does not offer control except over the direction of the oval.

In order to produce a smooth, soft-edged wash of color that spreads evenly over your backdrop, you need to use strip lights which is designed with several individual cells. Some of the lighting designers will be using spherical or parabolic reflectors while for other designers they would prefer to use wide reflectors that come with angle or curve to extend the beam.

Lighting fixtures designed with full automation would be considered as a form of intelligent lighting and any of the fixtures mentioned above might be able to use as automated but the most commonly used is the ellipsoidal lighting instruments. Automation features in lighting fixtures enables you to control the changing of colors, movement of your beam and also creating variety of shapes during the stage play.

In order to understand basic lighting design for a stage play, you need to analyze its script, have the knowledge on how theatrical lighting instruments or lighting fixtures operate and also know the best way to use each type of your lighting instruments. The main objective and goals of a lighting designer’s is to allow the stage play audience the ability to view all of the action performed on the stage.

In order for you to come up with great stage lighting design ideas definitely requires creativity and imagination. For you to make your ideas into reality also requires lighting designers to carefully choose suitable lighting fixture along with a good understanding of basic lightings and color concepts. Apart from that, you can also follow examples that you can read from lighting books, internet and also by observing live performances. By doing these things, you will be able to have some ideas on how a professional setup of a stage play is done thus enabling you to use them according to your own budget or even average size stage.

What you need to do:

Basic Lighting Ideas

Lighting instruments

Lighting effects

Positioning of your lightings

Stage Lighting

Method:

Using the right lightings fixture will determine whether your lighting design is a good one or not. Some of the basic types used for a stage performance include spotlights, which help to focus the lights over an individual performer or onto a particular area.

Floodlights are for illuminating large areas within your stage while the special effects lights is for making the scene more dramatic, which include the usage of as lasers, projectors and movable robotic lights.

For a basic lighting setup, you should include at least several floodlights that come with assorted colors of “gel” filters and you also will be capable to suspend and control the lightings.

Usually lights are mounted above the stage either on stand or being hanged on trusses for better efficiency and its positions are aimed at the main areas of the stage in order to provide the preferred illumination of a particular scene.

Make sure that all of the lights are kept on or able to be switched off and on using a controller.

Using an automatic controller with lighting sound-activated or controlled using programmed time intervals will definitely help you a lot during your stage performance.

If you prefer to have professional results, you may use a floor controller (normally used at theater performance) without the need to have a dedicated light person or if you have a lighting technician, you can use a standard controller during your stage play.

The standard lighting connection and control used is DMX 512 (Digital Multiplex) which is a low-voltage connections controlling system that enables you to handle up to 512 lighting channels.

You need to understand the different lighting fixtures and controllers available and determine the right fixtures for your stage performance. Nowadays, there are also lighting packages in the market with various sizes and also economical choice to have for your basic lighting setups, which include fixtures, stands and controllers.

As for special lighting effects fixture, you can place it on the floor behind performers, stage props or other props in order to provide a silhouette effect. As for live music performances, you might also consider using ‘blinders’, lasers, moving spotlights and strobe lights, which can be directed directly onto the stage or audience.

In addition, you can use fog to enhance your lighting design along with a ‘movable backdrop’ while floor-mounted fixtures are suitable for creating an emerging light through the fog.

You must also practice more during rehearsals so that you can use different type of special effects as well as do some observations on any of the live performances that you manage to attend to.

For having good visual effects, you need to place your lightings in suitable areas because the main purpose of lighting is for you to illuminate the stage areas and also the actors.

Whenever you are using a large lighting system that comes with a controller, you would be able to add moods and other effects to the basic illumination.

Your basic lighting should always be placed in front of the stage while your additional fixtures need to be placed at the back and sides of the stage along with special effects lighting and spotlights that can be aimed at the main performers or stage.

You can always perform some experiments for your stage lightings with only the basic lightings by placing your lights in different position or areas. Once your system grows, you can proceed beyond your basic element of illumination and also provide more mood and lighting effects.

This is applicable to both types of stages; the ones you want to set at home or the ones you want to set up in a huge studio to accommodate a large amount of students.

Stage Lighting Design

Method:

Firstly, you need to read the script of the stage play whether it is dance piece, musical, or concert type or go through notes for the non-scripted performance before you start to do discussion with the director and production team in order to know the play’s general concept. Other things that you need to take into consideration are the mood of play, atmospheres, locations and times of day. You should also take note for any specific lightning needs for example isolated lighting, onstage lamps or even time and season changes, which requires special lighting.

Apart from that, you also need to consider the venue of your stage play because this will help you determine the number of lights that you need and which is the best location to place them. Study the lighting bars location, which will also provide you with ideas on where to hang your lighting instruments. You should also consider whether you can place standing lights on the floor or even use rig vertical pipe that you can hang from the sides of the stage.

Different types of lighting instruments behave differently based on the type of the lighting. You can choose ellipsoidal reflector spots (ERS) whenever you need to display pattern projection, sharp edges or even tightly controlled beams. If you decide to have a soft-edged light, you need to use Fresnels and PARS which is also known as Parabolic Aluminum reflectors.

The positioning of your lights must also be placed at strategic area. For example, lights which are aimed straight at the stage will make any objects on the stage looks flat.

In order to increase the three-dimensional appearance of an objects or actors, you need to have angling lights from slightly off each side positioned toward the front of the stage and also add some lights from the back, top and sides of the stage.

If you have an overlapping color wavelengths of lights the color will in the end cancel each other out, for instance when you mix amber and lavender light will result to you having white color lights instead of brown color lights.

Lighting designers need to have the knowledge of interacting different color of lights during any stage play.

To have a proper or a good stage lighting, lighting designers must draft each of the lighting instrument into sketches of the stage where you will know the positions where you can position the lights and hang it accordingly, the sketching of the stage and also props or furniture being use.

This draft is also known as the light plot and should also indicate how each of the light being use is plugged in, what color being used and how to control the lightings instrument.

Make sure you make rehearsals of the performance and also the output display of your lighting instruments which will enable you to see whether the lights are all in working condition.

Although you are only a lighting designer, you should also take interest in the costume designs of your stage play, fabrics and props being used because all of these items will provide direct effects by your lightings.

Always fine tune your lighting instruments accordingly by changing the brightness of cues or tidying up the focus which is the final part of your production process especially during the final day of rehearsals for your stage play.

Fine tuning things at the last minutes might not be agreed upon with your other team members, but try to discuss with the team and find the best solution which is best for your audience to enjoy and feel good about the play.

In order to ensure the visibility of stage performers in a modern theater, the role of the lighting is the most important section that needs to be planned seriously. Although the exact role varies according to different type of performance and technological advances allow modern lighting to play a major role in stage play. Lighting technology in a modern theatre has gone from just being a mere prop to conveying the stage ambiance and emotions of the acting to the spectators thus it needs the right expertise in this field especially from lighting designer and lighting technician to support the producer and director of a certain stage play.

What you need to do:

Pulling Focus

Shaping

Scenic Elements

Mood Setting

Method:

Modern lighting comes with highly specialized lighting control, which enables lighting designer and technicians to choose specific areas that need to be illuminated while leaving the other unwanted areas dim. By doing so, the audience’s attention will be controlled and they can focus to where the director wants them to see.

Another role of lighting in the modern theater is using shadows that allow us to perceive depth. This method is to aim lights in such a way that creates the suitable kind of shadows in order to enhance three-dimensional shaping. Normally, this shadow method is used in dance where it will allow low side lighting curves around the dancers’ body movements thus casting highlights and also its shadows.

Apart from that, lighting can also create scenic elements for instance trees and windows where you can project shadows of these objects to be displayed onto the stage. Usually the object shadows are cast by using metal or glass patterns that will be placed inside the light, but there are also other methods used by other designers using full-color projections of background scenes as well as moving effects such as resembling firelight or rain.

Lighting is also able to create a specific mood, for example for comedic play, comedian would like to use bright light so that it will create a warm, jovial environment while as for magicians or mystery play, the lighting use is more to cool light or shadows for depicting creepy effect.
Therefore, lighting designers must have the knowledge and focus on the basic lighting concepts, which include determining priorities, lighting positions, use of shadows, usage of soft lighting, even lighting as well as localized lighting. All these concepts need to be coordinated accordingly together with other technical theater departments for ensuring a successful running of a particular show. Besides that, you should also be able to understand the way to analyze a script and also have the knowledge on how to use theatrical lighting instruments (fixtures), plus also the best way to use each type of lighting instruments.

What you need to do:

Determine you main priority

Use bright light to certain area of the stage

Use suitable lighting style according to type of performances

Use the concept of McCandless theory

Select the right lighting instrument

Use suitable color

Light Plot

Method:

Firstly, lighting designers need to allow the audience to view the stage performance and this is his or her main priority. This does not mean that you have to brightly lit-up the entire stage, but by using illumination sometimes it is sufficient enough to communicate the message that you intend to be spread around to all level of people.

Whenever there is a bright lit part on your stage play, it will definitely draw the attention of your audience. By coordinating your work with the director, the lighting designer would able to use this concept for enhancing the story play as well as highlighting certain stage areas.

The usage of lighting style depends on the type of performances and for example, in a dance show, a lighting designer will definitely use a lot of side lighting because it provides the casting of shadows that really help shape the dancer’s bodies. As for a comedy play, generally bright lights will be used while for a drama play you might consider to use shadows if the play needs to have a mysterious mood.

The most commonly use stage lighting concept is the McCandless theory where it involves the dividing of the stage into areas and then the lighting up of each area from two points. One from the front area at 60-degree angles, while another one should be one point behind the area. There are also other theories, which might be using straight-on face light and supported by high and low lights coming from its sides.

Stage lighting has similar general concepts like any visual art for example harmony and contrast. Besides that, discord can also be created in a particular stage production especially by using dissonant lighting colors and styles or even creating harmony that comes with an overall unified look.

Different type of lighting instrument behave differently and whenever you wanted to pattern projection, sharp edges or tightly controlled beams, you should be using ellipsoidal reflector spots (ERS). As for crating soft-edged light scene, you should use fresnels and PARs (parabolic aluminum reflectors).

Always remember that an overlapping usage of color wavelengths of light will result to the light cancelling each other out. For example, if you decide to mix amber color with lavender light, the end result that you will be having is white instead of brown color. This is where lighting designers need to have the knowledge on how to interact different type of colors for creating appropriate design.

Always ensure that you follow the light plot that you have draft and finalize that shows the positioning of each lighting instrument used, the place to hang them, the sketch of the stage area and also the props that you will be using. Make sure the light plot is able to indicate how each lighting instrument is plugged in, its colors and also the controlling of the lights.

Wire an Extra Light

When you are trying to add an extra lighting fixture or even a switch in your house, it may look like a difficult task to accomplish. However, if you start to learn the correct way in resolving the task step by step, it would be as simple as counting one, two and three.

What you need:

Pliers

12-gauge wire which will be run in a 120-volt circuit (for light fixtures)

12/3 wire that comes with 2 hot wires (one black and one red for the switch)

Junction boxes

Wire stripper

Screw nuts

Staple gun

Drill

Switch

Method:

Choose the lights that you want to connect to the switch and its location. Next, you need to install a junction box for each light fixture and for the switch. The junction boxes (made of either plastic or metal) are used for holding all the wire connections. Use a junction box with a bracket support for your light fixtures so that it will help support the light.

You should choose to set up this circuit from your existing circuit running in your house or even create a new one from the main supply through your breaker box. When using existing circuit, you must ensure that there is not more than 15 loads that are being used on the circuit where each light or outlet and switch are loaded. When you choose to run the wire from an existing circuit, you have to splice the wires together in order to connect them with the screw nuts inside your junction box.

To run the wire to the first light fixture and allow at least eight inches of extra wire to hang from your junction box. After that, run a wire from the light fixture and let loose about an eight inches extra to allow it to hang from the junction box before continuing to run the wire to the next light fixture. Then, repeat this step for each of your light fixture and also ensure to allow its excess wire to hang from the junction box.

To strip 3/4 of an inch off each wire, use wire stripper to expose the copper inside.

Cut an extra wire length (six inches) to create pigtails for completing the circuit of each outlet. Then, strip the ends on both sides of your wires where the black, white, red and ground wire will be separated for the pigtails.

For the light fixture, take all the wires with the same color together in a bunch. By using a screw nut piece, you need to place it over the wires and then turn it clockwise. Continue to pull each wire lightly and test its connection before proceeding with the same steps for each set of wire colors such as the white, red, black and ground wire.

Then, take the pigtail wires from each of the bunch; match them up according to the same color wires from the light fixture. Take two wires, one from the pigtail and one from the light fixture. Once again, use the screw nut piece and place it on the wire ends and turn it clockwise until it is secured tightly before securing the light fixture onto your junction box.

When you reached the last light fixture, you should take out the outgoing wire and lead it down onto the light switch junction box before allowing up to eight inches excess from the wire and strip 3/4 of an inch from the ends.

To connect wires to the switch, use pliers to bend the wire\’s end making it into a semicircle shape to wrap around the screws. Ensure that the black hot wire connects to the gold screw, the white wire is neutral to the silver screw and take the copper or green wire (the ground) connect to the green screw and make sure all screws are tighten.

Finally, you have to place the wires and then the switch into the junction box before screwing them tightly.

Lights are installed in every corner of the house and the energy consumption is around 20%. With the rising cost of living standard in a gloomy economy, there is even more urgency to save the pennies. This is possible with the right usage of lights.

Everybody talks about energy saving lights. Do you know what are \’they\’? Yes, \’they\’ because there are so many range of products. Check these new quirky lights out.

Lutron Radio RA

Lutron uses radio frequency communication to control the lighting in the rooms installed with the system. Whether your lights are LED, fluorescent, halogen or incandescent bulbs, the system is able to control the lights with a one-touch convenience. So, if you are lazy to get up to switch off the light at the end of the room, Lutron is there to help. Another goodie? No new wiring is required. Still not convinced of its green technology? Wait till you find out that Lutron not only saves almost 75% of your lighting energy consumption but also extends the lives of your halogen and incandescent bulbs and is made out of eco-friendly materials.

SolaTube Daylighting System

SolaTube transforms dark interiors into naturally bright living spaces. Therefore, it is pretty much ideal to lite up all areas of the house from the hallway to the closets. Besides that, the system is cost effective and environmentally friendly. Money wise? SolaTube also eliminates wasteful energy expense from using lights in the day.

Solar Cynergy

Usually used commercially, this product is like a solar lighting system but sans the typical solar lighting system. The lights are charged up to eight hours or less under the sun. Then they are able to provide up to 15 hours of bright lighting which are suitable for landscapes, pathways, docks and architectural accents. Why will you save costs? It is simply because Solar Cynergy does not run on batteries and comes with a 25 years lifespan. And the sun is free!

Basically, when you are selecting the lights for your home, do not just judge on the initial cost that you need to spend when buying. There are more things to consider. Amongst them are the longevity of the bulbs, contribution to your bills and the brightness. And not forgetting the heat generated by the lights because you will determine the temperature of your cooler based on the heat emitted. Does higher bill ring a bell?

The special effects and bright white flash of light, plus a deep rumbling sound as if it is coming from a thunder right from your area will attract anyone who attends to your house during the occasion. Below are some of the methods that you can use in order to have your very own lightning decorations.

What you need:

Method 1

A large iron or steel pot (not aluminum) with a plastic handle

Rubber gloves

An iron or steel fork

A plastic sheet (a dry-cleaner garment bag is good source)

Method 2

Inflated balloons

Wool clothing such as a wool sweater or a piece of real fur

A metal surface like a filing cabinet or a metal door knob

Method 3

Lightning machine

Method:

If you chose to use the first method, the first thing that you have to do is tape the plastic sheet onto a table top and then, you need to put on your rubber gloves.

The next step is for you, as much as possible, you have to darken your room or the area that you want the lightning to be visible.

After that, by holding the large iron pot or pan (to be used as if it is a thundercloud) by its insulating handle, you need to rub the large iron pot vigorously to and fro on top of the plastic sheet.

Then, firmly hold on to the fork (to be used as if it is a lightning rod) using your other hand and bring its prongs very slowly near the rim until the gap between the large pot and the fork is small. This activity will trigger a tiny spark which should jump across whereby a much darker surrounding would enable you to see the lightning spark very clearly.

For the second Method, you have to inflate balloons and also you need to, as much as possible, darken your room or the area that you wanted the lightning to be visible.

Then, you have to rub the balloon rapidly against either a wool sweater or a real fur. This activity need to be done for at least up to 10 times or more for creating static electricity.

After that, you need to move the balloons closer to something or some items made of metal such as a filing cabinet or a door knob. The static electricity created from the balloon will enable it to produce flash or spark from the balloon to the metal object (it is used as if it is a lightning but in a small scale. Always remember that the humidity in the air or if the air is damp (especially during winter) this kind of method will not work according to the ways that you want.

The third method is by using a lightning machine where it is capable of synchronizing the sound of the thunder along with the flash of lightning. It is a plug and play machine which include a lightning machine unit, a VEI Pro-Strobe Light (model v701), amplified speakers including sub-woofer, its relevant adapters and cables, customized thunder CD, along with its user manuals for your easy reference.

Strobe light is used by the machine in order to create lightning effects that provides a brilliant white light as if it is a real lightning. The machine comes with 50 watts power, flash and also speed control, plus you can attach multiple strobe light unit to only one Lightning Machine to enable you to have lightning effects in several areas at the same time.

There are several alternatives that you can use in order to light up your house if you have low ceilings such as installing pendant lighting which is affordable, comes with variety of attractive design and it is also easy to install. Other than that, you can also use Sconces type of light that can shoots its light out to specific area thus creating a soft and cozy ambiance and it also comes with variety of designs and shapes. Using a lighter and brighter lights will provide the room to look larger and if you add an upward light or table lamps or floor lamps, it will also gives you larger appearance. Below are some of the steps on how to light up your environment if you are having low ceilings problem;

What you need:

Pendant light

Sconces light

Upward light

Table lamps or floor lamps

Bendable rails

Method:

One of the ways to light up your low ceilings area is to attach pendants light onto bendable rails and installs it either above your dining room tables or above your kitchen island. This is to enable the lights to be directed downward to the particular area. It is also nice to have a dimmer along with the pendant for adjusting the amount of light to be use. The bendable rails are considered as one unit rather than you create a number of holes in your ceiling to install the lights. Other ideas that you can do with this method is by grouping them together like a cascading effect or alone and install it over your sink or bathroom for creating attractive focal point for that particular area. You can choose a lot of different types of pendants that comes with different shapes and styles, thus giving you a variety of options in decorating your low ceiling room.

Uplights are also suitable for low ceilings where it will shoot the light upwards and provide open space to your surrounding. The uplights comes with a lot of types giving you options to select your preferred choice and liking. For example if you choose an uplight ceiling fans that comes with a built-in light, you will be able to save on the cost and time of installing two different items. This type more suitable to be installed in your kitchens and also living rooms which sometimes tend to be hotter than other rooms inside your house. Other example is a small uplight chandeliers that you install onto your low ceilings will definitely add a dramatic feeling and also bold statement to the room. Floor lamps can also be use because it shoots its light upright so that your room looks like a larger space and it is also less expensive and affordable, plus it does not require any fixing or installation to your ceiling.

Other alternatives is for you to use sconces for creating some effect to the room where it also shoots its light out and up along with a soft lighting environment. The Sconces comes with several decorative styles which is suitable for brightening up your hallway, staircase or foyers. It also provides low maintenance installation process and is easy for anyone to do it. Tall light sources can also be use to light up low ceiling room for example the Torchiere floor lamps because it can fool anyone\’s eye so that they feel that the ceilings are much taller.

It\’s a splendid way to splash your cash, and save money in the long run too – buy energy-saving light bulbs! Don\’t we all love the environment, isn\’t it our responsibility and our duty to protect it? Yes, the easiest way to save the environment is to invest on lower wattage, newer, energy saving bulbs. Professionals say that if you purchase proper energy-saving light bulbs, you\’ll be saving hundreds in costs and besides that, you will find that these light bulbs are more efficient than the common ones.

What kind of light bulbs do you want?
There are three common light bulbs, incandescent, halogen and compact fluorescent light bulbs. Halogen is more efficient than incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs are more efficient than both. Ask your local supplier for information about the three bulbs and understand which one suits your house the best.
Despite the long hours, they all use different amount of energy, so choose wisely.

Be willing to pay more, and save less in the long run
Because the cost of living is rising by the day, it\’s always good to be thrifty, but sometimes, investing on a pricey product will have rewarding returns. Your new energy-saving and environment-friendly light bulbs may be costly, but they last longer and have tons of extra lifespan. Instead of constantly going to the shop to replace your light bulbs, in the long run, your new green light bulbs can easily outperform others. Keep this in mind: The more you spend, the more you save.

Do some good research first, don\’t get fooled
Nobody would really go count the hours one light bulbs have in it, but then, that doesn\’t mean you should be easily fooled by incandescent bulbs that claim to have “long-lasting life” because these can sometimes turn out to be a
bluff or even if it is, long lasting bulbs may not necessarily mean it\’ll save you a great deal of energy, usually they don\’t.

There are three different things you have to think of before buying your bulb: What type of bulb you want, the money you\’re willing to spend on it, and lastly, the amount of time and labor that comes along your new bulb. You wouldn\’t want a new “energy saving bulb” that needs to replace so often, in the long run, you won\’t save much, instead, you\’ll be wasting.
