Hot tubs, also known as spas in today’s age are very common. This might be as many refer to a the hot tub as the ideal way to relax. You need the correct amount of chlorine to keep the spa water properly sanitized. It is crucial to test the water frequently or in regular basis to make sure the water is safe and the chemical is in good balance. The best way to test the water is by using a water test kit that contains liquid reagents as test strips are not as accurate as the reagent kit. There are several types of chlorine that are used to clean the water in spas, and the amount of chemical added to the water will vary according of the type of chlorine used. Here are the steps on how to measure the chlorine content for your hot tub.

Things that you will need:

Water Test Kit

Hot Tubs

Steps:

First, use a water test kit to test the water in spa for the chlorine level. It is best to test several times for at least two times to ensure that the reading result is consistent. Follow the directions on the test kit for testing chlorine as some might come in vary brands and directions. It is important to rest the chlorine level first so that we know what to do next, all depending on the chlorine level.

The chlorine level for spa should be tested two or three times parts per million. The suitable chlorine level for your spa should not reach higher than 10 parts per million or lower than one part per million. If the level is too low, add chlorine to the water. This step is better to work out the best deal for your spa. It is better to stay in the required level as it will be the best and proper way for your spa.

Bear in mind that there are many types of chlorine that are been used in spas and you will need different amounts to add depending on what type of chlorine is being used. Then only you can decide on the best one for your spa, best ones or only one. It all depends on what is more suitable for your spa.

Follow the directions on the type of chlorine you are using for the capacity of your spa. The other important thing is to know how much you will need to raise the level of chlorine.

If the level of chlorine is too high, do not add more chlorine for a few days. Perform daily tests to the water until the level of chlorine is within the optimum range of two to three parts per million.

Waxing your floor will definitely give your entire room an even nicer and better look; something you never imagined. Some of us usually feel that waxing the floor is hard to do and also too much labor, but actually it is not that difficult task for you to complete. Below are some of the tips that can help you wax your floor properly and efficiently.

What you need:

Baby oil fix or mineral oil or olive oil

Broom

Vacuum with soft brush attachment

Laminate Floor Cleaner

Sponge Mop

Bucket of clean hot water

Vinyl, Laminate, Hardwood Floor Care

Method:

Vinyl Flooring is normally made of pure vinyl, which is more expensive and is a combination of vinyl with other material. It is easy to clean by simply using a household cleaner that you have diluted in water and just mop the floor using it.

If you notice that your vinyl floor have heel marks or scuff marks which cannot be removed by using a mop, try to remove it with baby oil fix, mineral oil or even olive oil. Just use 2 or 3 drops is enough, let it sit on the affected area for a few moment before you mop the area. Always be careful when applying this method, you must clean the area thoroughly; otherwise people can slip and fall down if it is not cleaned properly.

Laminate flooring is also popular among us today due to its similarity look with hardwood, but it is much easier to maintain rather than using real wood material. Make sure to clean the surface first using a vacuum cleaner with soft brush attachment so that there is no dust, debris or pet hair accumulates.

You can use floor cleaner to wax laminate flooring by applying to a small section first. Then, you need to dampen a sponge mop, wring out any excess water before you start to run the mop over the area with the grain of the wood in smooth and even strokes.

Then, rinse the mop using clean water before repeating the step 4 on the next area of the laminate flooring.

Wax is an easy solution to use on hardwood floor and also easy to clean, plus providing a much improved look on the floor. Before doing any waxing, you need to sweep or vacuum the floor first to remove loose dirt. After that, you can do a light damp mopping to double check its surface whether there are any more grease or dust.

Remember, to always allow the floor to completely dry before you apply the wax on it. Ensure that you manage to spread the wax evenly and thinly on the floor\’s surface.

Then, apply the second coat of the wax and repeat the process of applying the wax. Leave it to dry between each coats right until a thin layer remains on the floor\’s surface after it has dried. It is recommended that you choose a rotary polisher in order to get an extra shine look.

You could also look for a large heavy machine so that it can provide a brighter shine on the hardwood floor. Other alternatives to use rather than buffing the floor in order for the floor to shine again.

Vinyl Replacement Windows, Wood Replacement Windows

If we are living in a house that has been built a long time ago and has been left unchanged in terms of style and materials, then remodeling a few important parts of it might be the right thing to do. Of course, remodeling a whole house doesn\’t come cheap, which is why it is better to remodel only the important parts first in case it costs too much to remodel the whole house.

Moreover, remodeling little by little is the best thing to do. This way, we will be able to see and get a taste first of how the house will look like. Windows form important parts of the house. They are the view to the outside world and the view that we project to the outside world. Definitely, if you find that the windows at your place are getting old then you know it\’s time for a replacement.

Before you start to replace the existing windows in your house, there are several things that you need to consider which include the window\’s appearance, cost or price, maintenance, security, ventilation, energy efficiency and security. Not only that, whichever design you choose, windows can add character and also style to your home\’s interior.

What you need:

To know what needs to be repaired or replaced

Research or enquire with more than one companies

Get ready with the required specifications

Decide on the material of the windows

Method:

Firstly, you need to know the type of repair and also the replacement that you require whether the replacement is for the frame around the windows, which is rotting or damaged. Besides that, you should also take into consideration the cost for removing and disposing of your old windows.

Always make an effort to do lots of inquiries with different window companies so that you will be able to get the best pricing for your window replacement. It is best to enquire first so that you might be able to get the exact size of the window. You should be ready with your specifications when trying to compare prices such as the size (length and width) of the windows that you need, plus the type and make that you want.

Vinyl windows which are one of most popular choices in the market today are considered to be the most cost-efficient option. As for the windows made of natural wood, it is much more expensive due to its elegance in look and also its natural beauty.

The windows made of natural wood not only provide aesthetics, a variety of custom designs and colour, it is also a terrific insulator because it possesses thermal qualities. Apart from that, this type of windows can withstand extreme temperatures and also less susceptible to condensation. However, wood windows are more prone to swelling and shrinking thus requires you to do regular check-up and the wood frame, which is not properly cared for may become stick, warp or crack.

For many, it might be really easy to wire a switch, but there are others who have difficulty in wiring a switch. All really depends on the type of switch. Any manually operated switch used in your electrical system is called a snap switch. Some of the examples of a snap switch are single-pole, three-way and four-way (double pole) light switches used in residential lighting circuits. The easiest light switch to wire among them is the single-pole switch, which are usually used for controlling a light from one area. The three-way switches function as a controller for light switches that you want to control from two different areas. As for the four-way light switches, they are commonly used to control lights from three or more areas in conjunction with the two three-way light switches.

Before starting any wiring work, you need to remove the outer plastic cover of the Romex cable by slitting its jacket using your razor knife. It must be started with 3/8 of an inch from where it enters the box. You must do this gently and carefully so as to not damage the insulation of the individual wires. Then, you have to cut the freed jacket from the cable ends.

Next, you need to adjust the cutting depth of the wire strippers. This can be done by using a scrap piece of wire of the same size.

Then, you have to loosen up the adjustment screw slightly and try to apply gently, but with enough force to the strippers in order for it to be able to cut through its insulation without accidentally cuts into the copper.

You must ensure that the adjustment screw is secured tightly before you start to test the strippers on the scrap wire. The most important thing for you to do is to always check that the strippers are not biting into the copper.

Then you need to strip 3/4-inch from the insulation up from the ends of the insulated wires inside your switch boxes.

After that, you have to join the white wires together in each of the switch box. In order to make the join, you have to hold the stripped ends of the white wires side by side before twisting the wires securely with a clockwise movement by using your electrician’s pliers. Then, you have to screw on its wire nuts.

Next, you need to cut bare copper wire into 6-inch to 8-inch pieces before making three-way join of the two bare copper wires in each of the switch box. You should make the joins exactly similar to the white neutral wires.

By using the needle-nose pliers, make loops in the free ends of all the conductors in each of the switch box. You must make sure that the loops opening should be able to slip around a terminal screw.

You must also attach a single-pole switch by connecting one of the black wires onto each of the brass screws. The loops that you made earlier need to be placed clockwise around the screws. Tighten the screws securely on the wires and this goes the same for the bare ground wire where you must connect it onto the green screw.

After you connect the three-way switches by connecting the black wire, you will be able to generate electricity into the first switch box to the black screw on the first switch. After that, you must connect the black wire that already carries the electric power to the light, which is the black screw on the second switch. Make sure that the two traveler wires connecting the two three-way switches to the two brass screws on two of the switches. Whichever traveler wire you connect to which brass screw does not matter as long as it is connected to the brass screw while the bare ground wire should be connected to the green screws.

It is recommended that you connect one or more four-way switches between the tow three way switches. This can be done by inserting the four-way switches in the traveler wires and which traveler wires that you choose to connect to which screw also does not matter because as long as each of the set of your traveler wires are connected to the brass screws and also on the same end of the switch, it will be fine. One set of the traveler sires must also be connected to the bottom set of the screws while another set needs to be connected to the top set of the screws.

A back porch compost tumbler provides you with convenience and easy to use. This low-cost and small rotating composer can be put together in an hour. You can use this compost in outside of houseplant as a natural soil conditioner.

Basically, composting is a nice diy to practice specially if you have the utilities to begin with. Instead of throwing away unused kitchen scraps, they can be used to be turned into absolutely fertilizer for your garden. Here are the methods on how to install your own back porch compost tumbler.

Things that you need:

Tape measure

Marker

18 inch pole

12 inch plant brackets

5 gallon bucket with lid

knife, hammer

3 inch long of large headed nails

Caulk

Pencil

screwdriver or drill

Steps:

Clean the bucket and lid with hot water and soap and leave it to dry.

Then, you can measure from the bottom of the bucket up and mark the 10 inch spot. Measure up 10 inches directly from the previous mark and make another mark. This is the place where you are going to place the pole.

Place the bucket on its side.

Place the pole to the mark that you made and trace around the diameter. Puncture the circle with a sharp knife and cut around the edges.

Stick the pole into the hole until it touches the inside of the bucket on the opposite side. Make sure it lines up with the mark on the outside.

Trace the diameter and cut out the circle. Push the pole all the way through.

Turn the bucket and punch nails into the compost tumbler.

You can make the holes randomly or in three vertical lines all below the pole with space of 3 inches apart. Caulk around the nails to prevent leaks.

Decide the height and the place where you want to install the tumbler compost bin on your porch. Locate the wall stud by tapping or use a stud finder.

Measure from the floor to the height you choose for its placement. Mark the spot on the stud.

Measure over 16 inches and make a light mark. Measure up from the floor at this stud and mark the same height.

Attach the 12 inch plant brackets according to their instructions with a drill. Place the pole on the ends of the brackets. Swing it around to tumble it.

Unfreezing your pipes may sound crazy if you live in a place where this problem doesn\’t occur as much as it occurs to people living in areas where it is as cold as it can be or in areas where there are heavy snowfall. Heavy snowfall or abundance of ice might be gentle for the weather but it does end up causing a few problems to our household. One of the problems is frozen pipe.

Frozen pipes are situations where your house is not getting in any water due to the fact that its pipes are frozen due to the cold. When it comes to the winter season, frozen pipes are the problem that is common to happen. It can be painful and cost you a lot when you have to have someone to unfreeze frozen pipes for you. However, you can prevent all of that by doing it yourself. Most of the frozen pipes problem can be solved. It is easy and takes a short time to learn. Here are the methods on how to unfreeze frozen plastic and metal pipes.

Things that you need:

Hair dryer

hot water

towel

torch

Step:

First, check for any cracks on the pipe before thawing it or it might cause you trouble later on. If there exists any crack, turn the water off first and concentrate on repairing it. After you are done then move on to the next step.

If you want to unfreeze a plastic pipe, put a towel over it and pour hot boiling water over it. You can do the same thing for metal pipes.

The other way to unfreeze pipes is to open the closest faucet. Thaw the metal pipe using either hair dryer or torch.

Start thawing from backward from the faucet. Avoid letting the pipe get too hot to touch.

Let the faucet drip during below 32 degrees F weather to prevent pipes from freezing. Although it does still freeze, it may keep the pipe from bursting.

You can wrap the pipe with remodeled sleeves of foam. The sleeves come in every size. Close an adjustable wrench over the pipe and measure the distance between the jaws to find out what size you exactly need.

Then, secure the foam with duct tape every 10 inches and at all joints.

By now, your frozen pipes might feel loose and light thus showing that they are not frozen anymore and that water can now flow freely in your place.

coil brush

Methods:

First, loosen the refrigerator light bulb so that it can be easily taken off. Because the refrigerator light bulbs were intended for only short period uses and will likely burn out if left on during heavy duty cleaning.

Then, find your temperature control knob which is located inside the refrigerator. Turn the knob into the “OFF” position. Unplug the refrigerator. Before the cleaning start, remove all the food items from your refrigerator and store them in a cooler or separate refrigerator.

Next, pull out all meat drawers, wire racks and removable shelves. Prepare warm soapy water in the sink and wash all the items. Wash down the inside of the refrigerator with a solution made from 2 tablespoons of baking soda and ½ quart of hot water by using a sponge or rag. Continue with the same sponge or rag; wash the inside of the door and all its compartments.

After that, rinse the entire refrigerator and all the areas that you have just cleaned and scrubbed by using a fresh, clean rag or sponge. After everything has been rinsed properly, dry with paper towels or newspaper or allow to air dry thoroughly.

Replace the drawers, shelves and wire racks. Wash the rubber molding around the refrigerator using a clean rag with hot water and dish soap. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Continue to wash the outside of the refrigerator with hot water and dish soap or an antibacterial cleanser that you can find in any hardware or discount store. Again, rinse and dry completely.

If there is a drip pan in your refrigerator, remove it from underneath the refrigerator. Empty the pan and scrub to clean. Rinse the pan with warm water and let it dry before replacing. For the metal plate of the refrigerator near the floor, replace it and vacuum around this entire area. Using a coil brush or vacuum hose, remove all the dirt, dust and debris that has settled in the condenser coils. When finished, wash the metal plate. Rinse and dry thoroughly before replacing it.

Finally, plug in your refrigerator. Twist the light bulbs so that it turns on again. Turn the temperature control knob back “on” and control the temperature according to your desired settings. Return all food items into the fridge when the temperature is completely cooled.

Feeling that your bathroom is already not interesting and outdated? The best way to banish the problems away is by remodeling your bathroom. However, the thought of having no time and budget constraint has avoided you from remodeling your bathroom. Fear not, you can still remodel your bathroom and transform the room in less than $100. This project is perfectly suitable for small to medium size of bathroom. Here are the steps and things that you need to start up on remodeling your bathroom.

Things that you need:

1 can of paint for vanity

1 can paint for walls

1 can paint for trim

paint roller

three brushes

new blinds for the window

valance

Steps:

Determine three colors that you would like to have in your bathroom. Too many colors will spoil the focus of your creation and at the same time will increase your budget as well. The three colors will be applied each for the walls, to the vanity and to the trim.

For example, if you like vibrant yet modern style approach, choose brick red color for the walls, black for the vanity and white for the trim. You have to make sure that you like how the colors will fit together when its combine before applying the colors that you will use to remodel your bathroom.

Then, start your journey to any local Walmart or hardware store to purchase paint, painter\’s tape and brushes. When it comes to paint, it can be very expensive according to the quality and brand. If you want to remodel your bathroom for less than $100 budget, you have to find a source for the paint that offers high quality paint without sacrificing your greens a lot.

Try to find the most affordable paint you can. Most Walmart or big stores carries gallons of paint for under $14 each, depending on the places you live. A single gallon of paint should be sufficed for you to paint the bathroom walls for two coats. For a smaller can of paint, you will receive fewer prices than the large tin. You can use the smaller tin to paint the vanity and the trim of your bathroom.

A collection of paint brushes, roller and tape can be purchased for under $15 total. However, you can ask your friends to borrow these tools if they have it, so this will lessen your use of budget.

Before beginning to paint, you can take a picture of your bathroom. It will help you to remember the display for before and after photos to show the differences. Apply the painter\’s tape to the ceiling, floor and trim before painting on them. You might have to spend time and a screwdriver to remove the hardware from your vanity but the end look will look much more polished.

For the vanity, you can paint a dark and semi gloss paint as it can help to minimize or erase pre-exiting dents, smudges and chips. Black or any dark color is the best color you can use to mask the flaws in an existing vanity.

Then, using a small brush at first, apply one coat of paint to alternate the floor tiles. This step is optional not a must. In order to create continuity in your bathroom, use the same color that you chose to paint for your vanity.

Apply a second coat of paint to all areas beginning with the walls. If your walls are previously painted in dark color, you might want to apply a third coat of paint. The fastest and easiest way to help you on drying the paint at the vanity and the floor is by using a hairdryer.

Next, apply a coat of white paint to trim and reinstall vanity hardware. White trim can brighten up your bathroom and impose a clean look. You can replace the pulls on your vanity if you have extra money left on your budget. You can search good bargains on this product at Home Depot or any stores that provides reasonable prices.

Finally, add new blinds and valance if your bathroom contains a window. You don\’t have to find wooden blind because faux wood blinds are now available at stores such as Home Depot, Walmart or try finding them in thrift store. If you still have extra money in your budget, you can further upgrade your bathroom with an additional shower curtain and a new mirror.

A long day of working and being outside the house, when you are at home the only thing is that you want to do is to be in the shower; to calm and wind yourself; brushing the dirt away. The morning and evening showers will help you to relax and at the same time, make you feel clean and healthy. However, dirty shower stalls will bring an unattractive and unhealthy condition that will distract your shower experience. Your shower stalls and glass shower doors are among few places in your home which is hard to keep clean. Water spots would cause the constant damp atmosphere that brings the rampant growth of mold and mildew. Although, it is a lifetime commitment of household cleaning jobs, it is important to keep those shower walls clean to maintain the household cleanliness and health. Here are some methods on how to keep your shower walls clean and tidy.

Clean and disinfect your shower walls and doors at least once a week.

The house will look and smell better, at the same time, you can kill the germs that can bring harm to your family in terms of health. Athlete\’s foot and planter\’s wart are among many viruses that can be spread from the shower floor. Soap scum is the ideal place for the bacterial microbes to be trapped, so it is best to get rid of this menace as well.

Store a minimum of items in your shower to minimize cleaning.

It is a good way to take the stock of the items you keep in your shower before you begin to clean the bathroom. Throw away unused or half used bottles of shampoo and shaving cream as they will harbor the same bacteria that are lurking in your shower. When you minimize the storage of items in your shower room, the cleaning will be fewer in chores when you don\’t need again to move many things out before cleaning the shower.

Use good quality and fuss free cleaning product.

Today, cleaning the bathroom is a lot easier than it used to be in the past. With so many new technology and invention nowadays, there\’s a lot product that can help you to clean the bathroom at ease with regular use. There are shower sprays that can be used after your shower. This efficient product only needs you to spray on the shower walls and leave as there is no wiping required. It will prevent soap scum buildup on your shower room and glass shower doors. You will save more time and it\’s easier to clean for next time.

Use scrub brushes with long handles.

Although the cleaning spray will help your shower cleaner, you still need to scrub your shower wall and door. To prevent the mold and mildew in your shower, use a combination of cleaning product that disinfects and kill and also good scrub brush is needed. You can use scrub brushes with long handles that are specially made for cleaning the tub and shower. This will help you a lot as they can reduce the bending and stretching that usually require reaching all those areas of the tub and shower.

Use suitable products and tools.

Using the right products and tools to clean your shower not only will save your time but at the same time, it will kill the unwanted bacteria effectively. To clean a glass shower, use a soft bristle brush to remove the soap scum and water stains. Do not use sponge and rag as they are difficult to scrub off regardless of the type of cleaning product you use together with.

Washing machine is one of the most neglected things that people always forget to maintain with all the housecleaning chores we do. The function of a washing machine is mainly to help us with our chores. It becomes a mechanical servant for us to make us to do other things at the same time. However, since we leave the cleaning to the washing machine alone, we seldom see it as something that is also in need to be cleaned although we never forget to scrub the bathtubs, showers and sinks. The washing machine deserves the same treatment and care because it will get soiled with the dirt left behind from the clothes washed in it. Logically, it will be the dirt, soap scum and grime that become culprits to your washing machine that eventually will need to be removed. This dirt will not only get your clothes dirty, they are also full of body oils and dead skin. It will be useless to wash your clothes in your dirty washing machine in that kind of situation. You can notice these things as most of the washing machine are dark and you simply drop the clothes in dirty and pull out when they are clean. Actually, you will be shocked to find what is trapped inside your washing machine once you step into it. Fear not, as the solution is to clean your machine properly and it\’s much easier than you might think. Here are some steps on how to make your washing machine clean.

Things that you need:

white gloves

damp towel

new barrel (optional)

2 cups of bleach

2 cups of lemon juice

Steps:

First, wear white gloves to your hands and run them along the bottom of the barrel when you decide it\’s time to clean your washing machine. The white gloves will give you a clear image of what your hand had run into and you might be shocked with the result. It is often and normal to find a thin layer of grit, and possibly the stray of socks you been searching for. Although there will be grits, there are other materials that could be problematic to your washing machine which are the deposits and detergent deposits. Rust can build up from the laundry detergent and hard water inside the barrel and hoses. This rust can affect badly the performance of your washing machine and also your clothes, making them to wear down.

Next, damp a soft towel to wipe up the layer of grit or dirt at the bottom of the barrel as much as you can. Continue to wipe up and down the walls of the entire barrel. If there are any rusty spots found, you should avoid from sending them down. Exchange the extensive barrel with a new barrel if needed. Sometimes what you see as rust might not be as what it seems; it could rather be lime scale deposits. So, try washing it first to test whether it is lime scale deposits or not.

Then, set your washing machine water temperature as hot as possible and set the water level on high. Let the barrel fill completely and then add 2 cups of bleach for the stains and 2 cups of lemon juice for the rust. You can do this separately if necessary. But remember not to mix chemicals or cleaning agents. If you are facing with difficult stains, get cleaning products that are specially designed for washing machines in any local hardware or discount store.

Finally, rinse out any excess of lemon, bleach or cleaner with another cycle of hot water only after the cleaning cycle.
