Cooking your Corn on Cob


In order to cook your corn on the cob, there are three different style of cooking that you can choose according to your preference. The three different methods include boiling, microwaving and grilling. Choosing any of the methods really depends on the time that you have whether you are in a hurry or you just want to an enjoyable leisure time with your families. Apart from that, the flavor that you want to apply on the corn also plays an important part in choosing the right methods. In addition to these three easy techniques of cooking corn on the cob, you can also make use of other innovative methods such as roasting the corn by maintaining its husk on as well as using a pressure cooker. The most precious moment of eating corn on the cob is when you are gathering with your family members at one large table and enjoy the delicious taste of your corn especially if it has just being harvested from your back yard.

To corn on the cob, you need:

  • Trash can and trash bag
  • Microwave oven, soup pot or grill.
  • Tongs (to be used when you choose the boiling method)
  • Paper towels (to be used when you choose the microwave method)
  • Foil (to be used when you choose the grilling method)
  • Fork
  • Oven mitts

How to Cook your Corn on the Cob

  • The first thing that you need to do is to shuck the corn in order to remove off all its husks and silks.
    • First thing to remove is the husks which is the green leaves. It can be done by pulling them back toward the end of its ear until the corn is completely clean and exposed.
    • Next step is to use your fingers or you can also use a vegetable brush so that you would be able to remove the silks. The silks are the stringy yellow strands that you could see on the corn.

As for a tough yellow end, you can either use your hands or knife to break it off from the corn.

  • One of the methods that you can use for cooking corn on the cob is by using the microwave.
    • Each ear of the shucked corn has to be wrapped loosely using a damp paper towel.
    • Make sure that you place the corn on a microwave-safe plate or even a glass plate suitable for microwave usage.
    • Then, you need to set the heat on high at the level of 2 to 6 minutes.
    • As for the cooking time of your corn on the cob will depend on the microwave’s temperature as well as how many ears of corn that you have placed inside the microwave at one time.
    • You must check the corn for every two minutes after you start to cook them.
    • In order to know whether the cone is cooked or not, you can use a kernel or corn with a fork. If you find that there is liquid squirting out of the corn, then it is considered as done.

You can place as many ears of corn in the microwave according to the size of the microwave. However, you must make sure that the corn is laid down in a flat position and in a single row. Do not stack them all in one line.

  • The second method is to use the boiling technique on the cob.
    • The first thing that you should do is to place all your shucked corn into a large soup pot.
    • Then, you need to add into it with at least a depth of 1-inch. For example, once you finished putting the corn in your soup pot and push them down to the bottom of the pot using your fingers, the water level must comes up approximately 1-inch over your shucked corn.
    • After that, you can cover the pot and start to boil it for at least 3 to 4 minutes.
    • Once you have reached the time limit set, you can use tongs to remove the corn right away from the pot. If you want to a more tender corn on your cob, you should leave the corn to boil for another 3 to 5 minutes more.

Whenever you boil your corn on the cob, remember not to add salt into the boiled water because it will only make the corn tough.

  • The third method of cooking corn on the cob is by using the grilling technique.
    • Firstly, you need to spread olive oil on top of each ear of your shucked corn before you can wrap each ear of your corn with a foil individually.
    • Then, you have to pierce the foil randomly using a fork.
    • Make sure you grill them using medium heat for at least 15 up to 20 minutes. You must also turn them frequently so that it will be well cooked.

    Always remember that whenever you want to cook corn on cob,

    • When you choose to boil or microwaving your corn on the cob, you will notice that if more ears of corn you cook at one time it will take longer time for the corn to be cooked.
    • If you like your corn to taste sweeter especially when you are boiling the corn on the cob, you simply need to add a pinch of sugar into your boiling water.
    • It does not matter if the husks of your corn is still on if you are using the microwave or grilling method. You only need to peel back the husks a bit for revealing the corn without pulling them off. Then, you should clean off its silks before replacing the husks. Next, you can soak the corn for an hour in water before you start to cook them as mentioned above.
    • When you finished cooking corn using the microwave or simply using the grill, you need to be extra careful because the corn will be very hot. Make sure to use oven mitts whenever you remove its husks.
