In order for you to install a new door handle, you need to carefully plan and determine all the parts that you need to use. You can lay out all the pieces of your new door handle to ensure that you know where it will fits in. Make sure to figure which screw goes to which part of the handle before you start to screw it to the door. Do not mix all the screws together so that you will not get confused and in the end, do an improper installation of the door handle. Below are some of the steps that you can do in order for you to install a new door handle.
What you need:
-
Small flat-head screwdriver
-
Large flat-head screwdriver
-
Phillips head screwdriver
-
Allen Wrenches
Method:
- First of all, you have to attach the flat metal plate that will be screwed onto the door frame. This can be done by using two screws and the strike plate is used for catching the door latch whenever the door is closed. Then, you have to insert the latch into the edge of the door before you screw it with two screws on the face plate. Always remember to point the curved side of the latch towards the direction of the door when it closes in order to make the latch to automatically engage whenever the door closed. If you wrongly engage it backward, then it will not be able to be closed.
- The next step is to attach the mounting plate by lining up the mounting plate circles on both of the door\’s sides using the latch mechanism. Make sure that there are two screw holes that will attach the mounting plates and then you need to tighten the screws so that the mounting plates are flush against the front of the door. Different door handle comes with different requirements because it sometimes requires you to secure it on both sides, and making you insert it using two long screws in order for it to be hold together. You have to double check the mounting plate circles making sure it completely cover the hole in your door before securing the screws.
- After that, you will need to attach the door handle. The door handle\’s interior comes with a square shape rod running through it, known as a spindle (a spindle usually is already attached to one of the door knobs). You need to put this through the latch mechanism in the hole of your door but make sure the spindle is always attached to one of the door knobs before proceeding and then line up the other side of the door knob on the other side.
- You have to make sure the square shape of the spindle fits into the square hole of the other door knob. Then, you have to press them together, tighten up the screws onto the mounting plates. Test the doorknob by turning it from both sides to ensure that it moves correctly and also do some opening and close testing of the door to see whether it is lined up properly.
-
If you are satisfied with the testing and function of your new door handle, you can proceed to attach the rosette to cover the mounting plate, and finally you can snap on, screw on or stick on the doorknob but all this will depend on the model of the doorknob that you have chosen.
