Maintaining the Water of your Swimming Pool

 

In order to maintain the quality of water in your swimming pool, you do not have to be a chemist to be able to do it. The most important thing that you should know is to understand the components required to make your pool water safe and ideal for anyone to use it. Usually we test the components based on a parts per million (ppm) measurements. A pool is considered well maintained once you managed to balance the pool chemicals, filtration and also its circulation. Maintaining a swimming pool requires you to periodically balance the water to provide comfort for people to swim in it, and also ensuring that its surface and equipment is well protected. In addition, you must be able to control bacteria and algae, plus also removing debris along with other matter like falling hair in order to keep the pool in a safe condition for swimming and also keeping the water condition crystal clear. Therefore, understanding the pool chemistry and doing regular testing of your pool will definitely help in keeping your swimming pool safe and easier to maintain.

  • First thing that you need to do is to take a pool test strips in order to assist you in testing the level of chlorine, alkaline, pH and bromine.
    • Make sure that you do the testing of chemical levels at least 2 or 3 times within a week. This is to ensure the safety of swimmers who uses your swimming pool.
  • When you want to start doing the test, the test strip should be dipped inside the pool water.
    • Ensure that the test strip is totally submerged.
    • Once done, pull out the test strip from the water and wait for at least 10 seconds.
    • After that, you can do comparison of the test strip against the chart available on the container. The color chart will show you which chemicals are in an unbalanced condition.
    • Once you have determined which chemicals are unbalanced, you can add the appropriate chemicals by following the instruction from the chart made by the product’s manufacturer.

 

  • You can also hire a pool company who have much better testing gadget to do the testing for you if you have the budget right at the start of the season before you start to add lots of water into the pool.
    • Other option is for you to take sample of your pool water to the pool company’s office for them to do the testing.
  • It is important for you to maintain the water of your swimming pool because the water levels may affect the balance of chemical inside your swimming pool.

You must always remember that too much water will dilute the chemicals. Meanwhile, if the water is too little, it will help the chemicals becoming too strong.

  • You must also check the basic problems encountered by swimming pool such as green water.
    • Green water means that the pool has too much algae or smelly water. In other word, there is too much chlorine inside your pool water.
    • If your pool water is cloudy, that means it may not be having the correct amount of pH or alkaline level.

The chemicals that you use for maintaining the swimming pool should be kept in a cool, dry and shaded area. The area must also be out of reach from your children as well as pets.

Always remember that whenever you want to maintain the water of your swimming pool,

  • Make sure to do adjustment on the chemical level of your pool in an alphabetical order. For example, you should start to adjust the alkalinity first, followed by bromine or chlorine before proceeding to the pH.
  • Schedule your maintenance of swimming pool accordingly. For example, the content of chemicals in your pool should be tested daily, you need to vacuum any debris out of the pool in a weekly basis and as for testing the quality of the water must be done monthly or you can send sample water to a pool store in order to get it professionally tested.
  • Make sure to choose the check the type of chlorine that you should use for the pool. For instance, you can find chlorine that has the capability to kill bacteria, algae as well as microorganisms which is available in bottles, 3-inch tablets, 1-inch tablets, sticks or even granular form.
  • Whenever you are using pool chemicals, always follow the product manufacturer’s instruction displayed on the label. Do not combine any of the chemicals together because it should be added into the pool separately.
  • Remember to wear protective safety glasses and make sure to avoid breathing in the vapors while you apply the chemicals into the pool.
