Remove Mold on Antique Wood
Mold is a serious threat to your antique wood collections and you must always perform regular checks of these collections just to make sure that it is always free of mold before it starts to deteriorate and ruin your antique wood for good. In order to remove mold from infecting your wood collections, you need to have the right products and also use the correct techniques to enable the cleaning process of the antique wood done in a very safe and effective manner. Below are some of the steps to enable you to remove the mold that you found on your antique wood.
What you need:
- Vacuum cleaner that comes with soft brush attachment or hand-held broom
- Dish soap
- Bucket
- Water
- Rags
- 8 ounces of oxygen bleach
- Mineral spirits
- Fan or hairdryer
Method:

The first thing that you need to do is to start removing as much loose mold as you can from the antique wood by using a soft brush vacuum cleaner attachment. You can also use a hand-held broom in order to brush away any of the loose mold from your wood collections.
- The next step is to place a few drops of dish soap into a bucket that contains hot water. After that, you need to dip a rag into the bucket that contains the soapy bucket, wring the rag well enough before you can wipe out the molded antique wood using the rag. Always remember that you should not soak the wood with the soapy water because wood and moisture is not a good combination, and it will definitely ruin your antique wood. While you are wiping the affected area, you must also apply pressure on it and continue doing it until you notice that the mold has been removed.
- Make sure that the rag is often rinsed and wring for preventing the mold from being re-applied to your antique wood. Once you have removed the mold affected area, you have to clean and rinse your bucket of soapy water. After that, fill the bucket with 8 ounces of oxygen bleach and mix it with 1 gallon of hot water. Let the oxygen bleach dissolve into the water for at least five minutes.
- Use a clean rag and dip it inside the bucket containing the oxygen bleach and wring it well before wiping the wood using the rag until you have managed to remove all traces of the mold. The mixture of oxygen bleach helps remove the stubborn mold and at the same time, destroy the remaining mold spores on your antique wood.
- Then, you need to rinse the antique wood with a rag dampened with water and after that, wipe again over the wood using a rag dampened with mineral spirits that will in the end remove any film left by the cleaning products on your antique wood.
- Finally, you need to dry the wood either by using a fan or a hairdryer. But always be careful if you decide to use a hairdryer, make sure that you hold it at least 6-inch away from your antique wood.
