The Right Way to Renew Cutting Boards


For those of you who want to renew your plastic or wooden cutting boards, you must always do it with proper care especially on the solution that you decide to use on the boards. No matter what material of cutting boards that you are using for your kitchen usage, there are always simple steps that you can take in order to renew them and always maintain its appearance. In addition, if you manage to do proper care and maintenance of your cutting board, you can also prolong the board lifespan. Below are some of the steps that you can take for renewing either your plastic or wooden cutting board.


To renew cutting boards, you need:

  • Water
  • Bleach
  • Dishtowels
  • Baking soda
  • Lemon or lime juice
  • Clean toothbrush
  • Liquid dish detergent
  • Heavy stack of books
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Mineral oil
  • White vinegar

  • The first thing that you need to do is to in order to renew your plastic cutting board is to create a solution that contains mixture of 4 cups of water together with 1 tablespoon of bleach.
    • Make sure to mix the above solution in your kitchen sink that enables you to soak the plastic cutting board for the cleaning purpose.
    • Then, take the plastic board and place it into the mixture. Allow the board to soak in it for at least fifteen minutes. Once done, you can remove the plastic board.


  • The next step is for you to place the wet plastic board onto a dish towel before you cover it using baking soda.
    • After that, you have to squirt some lemon or you can even use lime juice along with the baking soda so that you would be able to create a paste.
    • Then, use the solution to rub the plastic board using a clean toothbrush.
    • Make sure that you leave the solution to set on the plastic board for at least 15 to 30 minutes.


  • After that, you can rinse the paste that you have used on the board by using running water from your tap.
    • Next, you can wash the board with hot and soapy water before rinsing it one more time.
    • Then, allow the board to dry completely.


  • Finally, you need to lay down the board on a flat surface in order for you to make sure whether the board has warp or not.
    • It is recommended by the Food Service Warehouse for those of you who notice that your board does not lie flat, that means it is time for you to replace the plastic board in order to avoid any injury.
    • For slightly warped plastic board, you can simply wash the board by using your dishwasher and while it is still hot you must immediately remove the plastic board. Then, place the board on a flat surface before stacking heavy books over it for at least an hour.
    • In some cases, some of the boards will show an improvement in terms of bowing or warp.


  • As for wooden cutting board, you can renew it by sanding any light grooves or cuts using fine-grit sandpaper.
    • Make sure that you sand it in a circular motion.
    • Cuts and grooves which are deep within the surface of your cutting board enable bacteria to easily absorb into it. It is recommended that you replace the board with a new one.

  • You can even wash the wooden board with hot water together with your liquid dish detergent.

  • After that, you can place a container of mineral oil in a container hot water in order to allow it to warm.
    • Once the oil is warm, you can cover the board using the mineral oil and allow it to saturate with the wood.
    • The reason for using mineral oil is because it helps prevent bacteria from penetrating and hydrates the wood, plus also keeps your wooden board from becoming dry and brittle.

Always remember not to use cooking oils when you want to seal the surface of your cutting board because it will spoil and easily rot your wooden board.

  • Finally, you need to mix a cup of water along with 3 tablespoons of vinegar to create a solution that you can rub onto the surface of your wooden cutting board.
    • Make sure that you use a dishtowel so that you can reduce any bad odors that occur.
    • Once finished, you have to rinse the board and then dry it thoroughly by using a dishtowel.

    Always remember that whenever you want to renew your cutting board,

    • You can simply re-apply mineral oil onto the wooden cutting board whenever you notice that its appearance is becoming lighter in terms of its color. This is according to the recommendation made by the Food Service Warehouse. For those of you who use the wooden board daily, you must make sure that you re-oil it every month.
    • Another solution that you should not use for cleaning wooden board is bleach.
