How to Get Rid of Dandelions


Dandelions are an extremely disturbing type of weed that is considered a nuisance to lots of people who loves their lawn to be totally green. It is also a very persistent perennial weed and difficult to dispose off unless you are using the right methods suitable to remove it from your lawn permanently. The Dandelion plants are capable of producing up to 15,000 seeds and able to survive for at least six years in any type of soil. By using certain type of tools you would be able to remove the Dandelions away from your lawn or your garden yard. Below are some of the tips that you can learn and make use of whenever you want to get rid of the Dandelions.

To get rid of dandelions, you need:

  • Lawn mower
  • Dandelion digger
  • Cardboard, black plastic or landscape fabric
  • Corn gluten meal
  • Vinegar
  • Boiling water
  • Synthetic weed killer

  • First thing to do in order to get rid of Dandelions is by boiling some vinegar for at least one minute
    • Then, you need to wait until the boiling vinegar has cool down before you start pouring the vinegar into the spray bottle.
    • Boiling vinegar would be able to create higher concentration of acetc acid which is a natural weed killer that you can use for removing Dandelions on your yard or garden.
  • Always try to grow a dense and healthy lawn because if you have thick grass, it will block the sunlight from giving the Dandelions the chance to germinate.
    • Make sure to mow your lawn regularly especially if you notice that the Dandelions are blooming and this will prevent the Dandelion flowers from turning into seeds and keep on growing.
  • Another options is by spreading some salt especially on area that you feel the Dandelions are growing
    • The salt will kill the Dandelions and remove the plants permanently.
    • It is much better if you managed to pour some of the salt to the base of the Dandelions so that you can destroy the roots and prevent them from spreading.

Try not to spread the salt on any area which is not affected by the Dandelions.

  • The next step is for you to pull out the Dandelions away from the soil together with its roots.
    • Make sure you pull its taproot along with the Dandelions because the taproot has the ability to grow up to 10-inches deep into the ground.
    • If you do not want the plant to sprout further away from your house, you should be removing the Dandelions taproot. The taproot can prevent the plants from sprouting further to other area.

Always make sure that you pick and remove all the Dandelion leaves and flowers along with the yellow flowers. This is because the Dandelion flowers can release new seeds while their leaves are the provider of nutrients to the Dandelion roots.

  • Another method that you can use is to spread Corn Gluten Meal (CGM) onto your garden. The CGM is hundred percent natural and also safe for pets and children.
  • Next step to do is to use a large screw driver that comes with a V shape cut or also known as the Dandelion remover tool
    • The Dandelion remover tool needs to be pushed into the ground right beside the Dandelion plant. After that, you can push the tool’s handle toward the ground thus making the dandelion pops out of the ground.
    • Make sure that you removed the entire Dandelion roots so that it will not grow again in the near future.
  • Another way is for you to use a shovel in order to dig up the Dandelions.
    • Make sure that you separate the Dandelion from the soil
    • Always keep the grass upward while the soil needs to be pressed back onto its original spot.

    Always remember that if you do not want to get rid of Dandelions,

    • The Dandelion greens contains vitamins C and A, plus also magnesium, iron, calcium and other minerals. You can also use the Dandelion greens just like you consume salads but make sure that the greens has not been treated with chemical or pesticides. Other than that, it can also be made as nutritious compost.
    • You can also cover the Dandelion plants using cardboard, black plastic or landscape fabric and to create the cover into a more aesthetic look, you can simply add some mulch on top of it.
