Making Windmill Blades

Windmills not only make your garden look nicer, but these are also able to help you in generating power that you can use for your home. If you build a windmill in order to generate energy, it is one of the best solutions to help your environment and participate in the go green campaign to help our earth especially by using natural energy. Some people might think that having a windmill in the garden can make their garden and landscape looks unique. Building windmill blades is not a difficult task to do if you follow the correct instruction and also have the proper tools to create the windmill blades.

To make windmill blades, you need:

  • Sheet metal
  • Metal cutting scissors
  • Electric hand saw
  • 1 PVC pipe
  • Tape measure
  • Marker

Making Windmill Blades

  • First thing that you need to do is to cut your PVC pipe in a half length size by using a hand saw
    • Once you finished cutting it, it will become a half tube. Set it aside for a while in a place near your work area.
    • This PVC pipe will be used later on as a mold in order to shape the metal of your windmill blades.
  • The next step is for you to calculate the size of your blades.
    • The length of the blades will depend on how many units of the blades that you want and also how tall the base of the windmill is.
    • An appropriate length of your blade should be more than 1/3 the height of your windmill base.
    • You will notice that some windmills have several shorter blades being placed closer together while a standard power generating windmills normally use three long and slender types of blades.

This article provides you with tips and information for creating 20 short blades with each of them measuring 3 feet long by 6 inches wide. As for the windmill, it is 20 yards in height.

Then, you need to measure one rectangle on your sheet metal for each blade, based on the size mentioned in the above step.

  • Each of the rectangular blades needs to be cut out and you also need to drill holes in each of the blades to use for mounting the blades onto your windmill base.
  • The position and amount of holes required depend on how you want to mount the blades onto the windmill base.
  • After that, you need to line up the bottom and top of each blade one by one with the ends of your PVC pipe
    • Next, you have to bend the sides of the blade so that it will curve around the PVC pipe.
    • Once finished bending all the blades, you can now proceed with attaching them to your windmill.

Always remember that if you want to make windmill blades,

    • Make sure that you cut the PVC pipe according to the size of the blades that you want to use. The bigger the size of your blades, the bigger diameter size of PVC pipe that you need to create.
    • Besides that, you can also use different size PVC pipe to decide how much curve your blades will be having. If you use a large a larger diameter PVC pipe for more narrow blades, you will need only less curvature on the blade. If you use a small PVC pipe for wide blades.
    • It is recommended that you use a PVC pipe that have same diameter as the length of your windmill blades.
    • In order to have flexibility, you can also use sheet metal but you need to handle them carefully and with caution because it has sharp points or edges especially when it is cut and can easily cut your skin.
    • Always wear hand gloves and proper clothes whenever you are dealing with sheet metal.
