Sanitizing your Whirlpool Bathtub


You might find that a new whirlpool bathtub looks perfectly clean, but think again before you start to immediately jump into it to have a relaxing bath for your muscles and frayed nerves. According to the research done by the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University, out of 43 whirlpool bathtub that was tested, they found out that the pipes is a perfect place for harboring bacteria and fungi especially if there is stagnant water still remaining in the pipes. This situation occurs because it is not that easy for you to completely drain your whirlpool of the water especially in the jets and pipes. Therefore, you should be wary whenever you decide to use public whirlpool bathtubs. As for your own whirlpool bathtub, you should sanitize it on a regular basis in order to keep it clean all the time.

To sanitize whirlpool bathtub, you need:

  • 1/2 cup bleach
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon powder dishwasher detergent
  • Old and unused toothbrush
  • Whirlpool spa sanitizer tablets or cleansers

Sanitizing your Whirlpool Bathtub

  • First thing that you should remember is to clean your whirlpool bathtub every time before you want to use it.
    • For those of you who are using a whirlpool for the first time in your house as well as the one used by the public, you need to flush the whirlpool pipes using a product known as an Oxy-flush. This product is commonly used for cleaning touch stains in the toilets.
    • In order to clean the whirlpool bathtub, you have to fill the bathtub above the jets and at the same time hold your Oxy-flush container right next to your intake. This is to allow the solution to go through the whirlpool pipes and start to flush them in order to clean it.
    • After that, you need to turn the whirlpool on for at least 30 minutes. Once finished, you should drain it before you start to run it again enabling you to rinse the whirlpool.
  • In order to keep your whirlpool bathtub sanitize all the time, you should maintain it on a monthly basis and you can even do it just by using regular household items that you have in your house.
    • Similar to the fill-and-run method that you use with the Oxy-flush solution, you can simply add a cup of your dishwasher detergent like Cascade or Palmolive and flush it in your whirlpool for at least 20 minutes.
    • Apart from that, other household products that you can use to sanitize and clean your whirlpool bathtub is bleach and vinegar.
  • Another option that you can use is a whirlpool spa sanitizer tablets or cleansers such as Ei-Giene Whirlpool Bath Sterilising Tablets or Sani-Bath.
    • Just put the tablets in your whirlpool after finishing your bath so that you can prevent the growth of germs within the whirlpool pipes.

As for a newer version of whirlpool bathtub models, you will find that the jets can be easily removed whenever you want to do cleaning task. Make sure you flush the jets especially if you have not been doing it for quite some time. Before you remove the jets, you need to unscrew the covers. Make use of your old toothbrush together with a little detergent for cleaning all of the jets pieces and also at the surrounding area of the screw covers. Always rinse all of the pieces before you proceed to replace the parts.

  • You can also fill your tub with hot water that should not exceed more than 140°F at least it reaches two inches above the highest level of the jet.
    • Then, add 1/2 cup of bleach along with a tablespoon of dishwasher detergent powder.
    • After that, you should turn on the jets together with the mixture of bleach, detergent and hot water for approximately 15 minutes.
    • Once finished, you need to drain the bathtub and refill it with cold water.
    • Turn on the whirlpool tub again for at least another 15 minutes so that it will flush out any remaining bleach and dishwasher detergent from your whirlpool jets.
    • Next thing to do is to drain the bathtub and allow it to dry completely or you can even refill the bathtub with new clean water for your next usage.
    • Apart from using bleach, you can also use 1 cup of white vinegar to clean your whirlpool bathtub by following the above similar step.

The reason for using the dishwasher detergent is to loosen up any grease that accumulate in the jets like bubble bath, soap residue while the bleach helps you disinfect your whirlpool bathtub and pipes.

Always remember that whenever you want to sanitize your whirlpool bathtub,

  • Make sure that you disinfect it every time you finished using the whirlpool bathtub. By applying this method, you would be able to reduce any potential growth or contamination of microbial.
