How to Recharge Window Air Conditioners


When you have been using your window air conditioning system for quite a long time, you will notice that the window air conditioners will start to produce warm air. It does not provide the cool air as fast as the first time that you installed them in your room. Normally, the reason behind this problem is because of a low refrigerant. This problem does not require you to purchase a new unit. The only item that you should purchase is the refrigerant kit that can be found at your local home improvement store. Once you have the kit, you just need to recharge the current air conditioning unit. This is one of a cost saving measure that you can take and also able to increase the lifespan of your existing air conditioner. In order to recharge your window air conditioners, you only need to do a few simple steps and it can also be done several times especially in the hot and humid period of the year.

To recharge window air conditioners, you need:

  • Rag
  • Refrigerant replacement kit
  • Screwdriver

  • First thing that you need to do is to remove the air conditioning unit away from the window
    • Make sure that you set a rag or working cloth over your work area so that you can protect the floor.
  • Next step is to remove the back metal casing by unscrewing the screws that secure it.
    • Once done, you would be able to slide the metal casing off.
    • After that, you would be able to see the unit’s compressor and a metal cylinder that has hoses coming of the unit.

Always ensure that you thoroughly examine the compressor and find the larger among the two hoses as this hose will eventually used to recharge the unit.

  • Then, you have to attach the service valve onto the larger hose on the compressor unit.
    • The service valve is the bigger among the two valve connectors within the refrigerant recharge kit.
  • The next thing to do is to attach the tap valve into the smaller hose on the compressor unit.
    • The tap valve is the smaller of the two valve connectors within the refrigerant recharge kit.
  • Once you have completed the above steps,
    • You need to turn on the window air conditioning system and set its setting to the highest level available for allowing the flow of the refrigerant to start.
  • The charging time frame for the unit should be done until the can of refrigerant is empty.
    • After it is finished, ensure that you disconnect the valves from the unit’s compressor hoses.
    • Then, you have to restore back the unit’s metal protective casing and make sure that it is securely tightened.
    • Next, restore back the air conditioner onto the window and ensure that it is firmly secured.

    Always remember that if you want recharge window air conditioners,

    • Make sure that you charge the window air conditioner until the can of the refrigerant is finish.
    • All of the above steps need to be repeated whenever you want to recharged the window air conditioners.

An air conditioner unit needs regular maintenance which helps increase its life span. If your air conditioner unit is not maintained according to proper guidelines, the unit will break down and cost you more expenses compared to units which have regular servicing.
