How to Repair a Rip in a Leather Couch

  • First thing that you need to do is to purchase a leather repair kit
    • If you do not want to purchase the leather repair kit, you can also look for a leather patch along with garment glue.
    • If you do not want to have different colors and textures of your leather patches against your leather couch, you can also take a look underneath your couch to look for any excess leather that you can use as your leather patch. By doing this, you would be able to match the correct color to repair the ripped in your couch.
  • Leather repair kits normally provide you with an abrasive pad that enables you to scrub the leather along with a surface prep compound like a gentle solvent for you to remove body oils from the couch as well as other dirt that can prevent a good adhesion. Other items include leather patch, dyes and instructions in how to mix them together enabling you to produce a good color that matches your couch.
  • The next step for you to do is to place a piece of blank paper over the ripped area of your leather couch so that you could trace the size.
    • Then, you need to draw a circle with at least about an inch from the affected area where this drawn circle will be your pattern to use for creating a leather patch for the couch.

Make sure that you set at least an inch length on each side of the ripped area so that it will not become loose once you started to use it over time.

  • Then, you have to cut the pattern accordingly and after that, lay it over the leather patch
    • Ensure that you cut it very carefully in order to match the size from the paper pattern that you have created earlier.
    • Following the paper pattern is important so that the patch that you want to use is not oversized thus making your guest realize that the leather couch has been repaired.
    • You also need to fill your leather rip by using a thin layer of leather filler with a plastic butter knife. Sometimes leather fillers are also included along with your leather repair kit.
  • After that, you need to apply the patch onto the leather couch
    • Make sure that you check whether the patch would be able to cover the affected area.
    • The entire back side of your leather patch needs to be applied with a small amount of glue. Once you have finished applying the glue, you need to immediately place the patch over the ripped area.
  • Finally, you have to leave the patch to dry thoroughly
    • Besides that, you can also place an object over the ripped area of your couch. Try to use a heavy nonstick object for this purpose.
