Tips to Refinish your Soloflex Bench

 

A Soloflex Bench is also known as a personal gym that you can setup in your own home. It is a work out equipment which consists of a metal frame, barbell-and-weights combination, plus also a bench. The equipment enables you to perform various kinds of weightlifting exercises when you are in a sitting position. For a newer version of Soloflex models, you will find a padded bench on it but the older models only comes with a basic wooden bench that need refinishing when the times come. Once you refinish them, it will look just like a new one or even increase its value if you want to sell them in future. The most important thing that you need to do is to use suitable grit of sandpaper during any stage of your refinishing process because if you use wrong sandpaper which is too rough, you might ruin or damage your Soloflex bench.

To refinish soloflex bench, you need:

  • Belt sander
  • Chemical paint stripper (optional)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sandpaper, 120 grit, 220 grit and 320 grit
  • Wood stain

Tips to Refinish Your Soloflex Bench

  • First thing that you need to do is to remove the bench away from the Soloflex. It is normally attached to the main frame of the Soloflex through a bench pin that goes through holes right in the metal supports on the bench and also on the frame.
    • For those of you who are using the leg extension that can be attached to the other end of your bench, you should firstly unclip it before removing the hitch pin.

     

    Always do the task in safe and proper ventilation. Remember to put on your hand gloves and goggle to protect your eyes especially when you are using chemical paint stripper.

     

  • Take a belt sander in order to sand off the existing varnish.
    • You must be extra careful not to remove too much of the wood bench.
    • You should also sand it with the wood’s grain if you notice there is any and make sure not sanding it against the grain.

     

  • If you do not have a good power sander to remove the varnish, you can also use a chemical paint stripper.
    • The paint stripper can be applied by using your hand and make sure that you wear rubber gloves or use a paint brush.
    • As for any of the remaining varnish, you can use 120-grit sandpaper.
    • If you have any excess paint stripper, you need to remove them by following the instruction supplied by its manufacturer.
    • Once done, you need to allow the bench to dry thoroughly.
  • The next step is to sand the wood smoothly using 220-grit sandpaper.
  • After that, the bench needs to be stain with your preferred type of stain using either a brush or hand. This method should be applied depending on the type of wood for your bench and also your preferred color.
    • Next, you have to let it dry completely.
  • You must also apply the top coat using a paintbrush.
    • It is recommended that for one set of Soloflex exercise equipment, you should be using polyurethane. This is because it is water-resistant and also would be able to provide the wood with some protection.
    • Make sure to apply the polyurethane with several coats and also sanding the wood in between of the each coat with only a thin layer. Sand them using 320-grit sandpaper.
    • Once you reached the final coat, you need to allow it to dry completely.

    Did you know that the first model of Soloflex was made available in the market in 1978 which consist of only shock tings for adding the weight onto the barbell arm? Until now, the shock rings are still being used while the weight straps can also be found on certain models which are now made of durable rubber. The old version of Soloflex also does not designed with leg extension and butterfly attachment. This makes it a lot easier for you to assemble them.

    Always remember that whenever you want to refinish your soloflex bench,

    • You must ensure that you follow every instruction provided by the manufacturer along with all its safety procedures especially in terms of using power tools.
